Burial Date: January 9, 2014
Funeral Home Hidden Valley Funeral Home of Kearney
William (Bill) Poe, 86, of rural Kearney passed away January 6, 2014, at Excelsior Springs Convalescent Center. William was born in Missouri City, Missouri and upon graduation from Excelsior Springs High School, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea. Upon returning home, he married his wife of 65 years, Margaret Holt. He was employed as a Mill Wright at the now known Ford Plant making skins for airplane wings which were flown in the war. He then joined his father-in-law in livestock farming and from that, grew his love of cattle. William and Margaret especially liked going to cattle auctions and attended many in Kansas City and South Missouri, purchasing calves and turning them into feeder cattle. Bill truly loved his life on the farm and said many times “He wouldn’t want to do anything else”. After retiring, he and Margaret loved traveling in their fifth wheel – spending many winters in Arizona with dear friends.
William was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert and Madge Poe, as well as a younger brother, age 4. He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of the home.
The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm, Thursday, January 9, 2014, at Hidden Valley Funeral Home in Kearney. Funeral services, conducted by Mr. Gary Porter, will be held at 2:00 pm in the chapel. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Kearney where full Military Honors will be presented. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
