Mary “Kakie” K Herod, 85, of Excelsior Springs, passed away Friday, March 23, 2018, in Excelsior Springs, MO.

Visitation will be Tuesday, March 27, 2018, from 11a-12:30p at Hidden Valley Funeral Home of Lawson. The funeral will follow at 12:30p at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lawson Cemetery.

Mary was born September 19, 1932, in Mirabile, MO. She is the daughter of the late William and the late Nannie Jane (Smith) Gilmore. She married Ralph D Herod on June 7, 1953, in Cowgill, Missouri. Ralph preceded Mary in death on January 15, 2000.

Mary Herod was a member of Old Union Christian Union Church near Lawson, Missouri, and was a leader in the Rebekahs, a service organization associated with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In 1968, Mary was honored with the Miss Rebekah award, the same year she was treasurer for the organization. She’s also past president for American Legion Auxiliary

Mary was a whiz at crossword puzzles, enjoyed playing cards and bingo, and was an avid reader. She also loved to fish with her husband Ralph. She adored her family and loved spending time with her children, her grandchildren, and her many, many great-grandchildren.

She is survived by one sister: Betty (Gordon) Wilson of St. Joseph, MO; one son: Dainnie (Ferol) Herod of Mt Vernon, MO; five grandchildren: Gary Gillespie, Debbie Hubbard, Danette Dallas, Denise Herod, and Anna Herod; one nephew: Wayne Wilson; one niece: Barb Wilson; and many, many great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her daughter: Mary Louise Gillespie; son-in-law: Howard Gillespie; brother: Billy Lee Gilmore; half-brothers: Clayton Gilmore, and Mervin Gilmore; and grandchildren: Bobby Gillespie, and Stephen Gillespie.

Memorial Contributions may be made to Old Union Christian Union Church, Lawson, Missouri, or to the Lawson Cemetery.
