Gertrude LaVaun Ward King, passed away Thursday, May 8, 2014 at North Kansas City Hospital. Visitation will be Monday, May 12, 2014, at 9:30 A.M. at Hidden Valley Funeral Home, Kearney, MO. Funeral will follow at 11 A.M., at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 3 P.M. at the Gilman City Masonic Cemetery.
LaVaun was born November 6, 1924 in Gilman City, Missouri in Davies County to John Daniel and Jessie Gertrude (Davisson) Ward. She was a strong woman in determination and devotion to her Christian faith, family and country. She graduated from Gilman City High School in 1942 and while her family was growing, she owned a beauty shop in her home, and also owned the King’s Café in Gilman City from 1958-1961. She was an ideal waitress and nurse’s aide for many years. For the last 11 years she has worked at Wal-Mart Liberty/Kansas City in the bakery. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kearney, Missouri. For the past 20 plus years she was caretaker for the Old Blue Ridge Cemetery located in Adams Township in Harrison County.
LaVaun was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Jack D., VJ, Billy Metz, George, and John Clayton. Survivors include her sons, Charles King (Sue), Pleasant Valley; Darwin King (Janice), Smithville; Bill King (Nancy), Weatherby Lake; daughters Marsha Farmer (Mike), Kearney, Margaret Harris (Gordon Hale), Gilman City, and also Jason Ward; 18 Grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and 21 great-great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
