January 16, 1935 - September 8, 2018
Don York, Pastor Emeritus, 83, of Kearney, Missouri, passed away peacefully at home on September 8, 2018.
Our beloved Don was known by many titles. Although he never desired a title, he embodied many roles. He was known as husband, father, grandfather, uncle, pastor, teacher, bishop, friend, chaplain, and musician, but was proudest to be called a child of God. Donald Edward York was born to Nancy Jane Myers York and Louis Alexander York in West Plains, MO on January 16, 1935, and died peacefully in his home on September 8, 2018. He was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ on April 17, 1983, at First Pentecostal Church in Trenton, MO, and soon thereafter received the Holy Ghost, and the journey began with his new life. He is now enjoying the presence of his Heavenly Father.
Don had a big heart, which was evident by how well he was loved by so many. He believed the best in people, even when they didn’t, and participating in prison ministry for many years. He was the founding pastor at the First Pentecostal Church of Kearney and continued as pastor emeritus and as chaplain to the Kearney Fire Department until his passing. He loved his family, his church, his country, and most of all his God. Don was always full of stories and you knew he was about to say something profound when he started to say, “Now (your name)….” His wisdom and humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Don was one of nine children, preceded in death by Helen York Pollard (sister), Robert York (brother), John Riley York (brother), Shirley York Spivey (sister), Judy York Presley (sister) and an infant sister Carol Sue York. He is survived by Patsy York Carrow (sister) of Tulsa, OK, and Jack York (brother) of Bridgeton, MO. He is preceded in death by daughter Suzanne York Fred. He is survived by his spouse of 37 years Patty York of Kearney, MO, sons Scott (Anita) York of Raytown, MO, Steve (Cindy) York of Holt Summit, MO, and Shawn (Michelle) York of Jefferson City, MO, and grandchildren Sarah, Abigail, Hannah, Adam, Polly, Seth, Peyton, Marissa, and Ashley and great-grandchildren Ethan, Gideon, Caleb, Kiara, Marcus and one on the way.
